If a major fix is necessary, first determine whether air conditioner repairs will be covered under warranty or not, we can help you with this process.
If your HVAC system is more than 10 years old, the cost of repairing or replacing a major component may not be worth it compared to investing in a new, more efficient unit.
A good recommendation is to use the following formula:
Replacement value (new system) > Equipment age x cost of the repair.
For example, your existing AC unit is 10yrs old and you’re looking at a $600 repair.
10 x 600 = 6,000. A new system would be $4,500. In this case, it would be recommended that you replace the system. $4,500 > 6000
Another example would be that your existing system is 5yrs old and you’re looking at the same $600 repair.
5 x 600 = 3,000. A new system would be $4,500. In this case, it would be recommended to repair your existing system. $4,500 < 3000
This is taking into account the system age, operating hours, potential operating cost savings, continued length of residence, repair history, potential future repairs, and finally, warranty on the new system.
