Should I replace furnace same time as air conditioner?

This is a great question that we get asked all the time. There is no straightforward answer for this, it depends on a variety of factors. 

Let’s look at some reasons why you would want to replace your furnace at the same time as your air conditioner.  

Your current system is not sized currently – This is a big one and can cause several issues. Excessive noise, premature breakdowns, and a lack of comfort. This often was the case in our parents’ or grandparents’ homes growing up. 

Your existing furnace is older, and you would be looking at replacing it in the next couple of years anyways – If you have an older furnace that you will most likely be looking at replacing within the next couple of years anyway, then now is the time to change it. Extended warranties – Often you can get an extended warranty on a full system, furnace + AC, when they are installed at the same time, bringing your warranty from 2yrs to 5yrs or even 10yrs. This will save you money and give you peace of mind for years to come. 

Communicating system – The newer, high SEER AC units, being 18+ SEER, require variable speed and communicating. They require matching equipment. The new technology is designed to constantly communicate between the thermostat, furnace, and air conditioner.  These systems are the best on the market for achieving peak efficiency and comfort level.  

Now for the reasons why you wouldn’t want to replace your furnace at the same time as your air conditioner. 

If you plan on moving soon – If you plan on moving in the very near future, then it doesn’t make financial sense to spend the extra money on the new furnace unless you are looking to add some additional value to the sale of your home. 

If you have a newer furnace – If you’ve already installed a new furnace recently, then there’s no need to replace it, if it’s sized correctly and will work with your new AC of choice. 

Finances are tight – With everything going on in the world today, this is completely understandable.
